How to Choose a CD Storage Cabinet

You may be wondering why there is a post on the DVD cabinets site about  about CD cabinets.  Aren’t they the same thing.  Well kind of.  Actually there are some differences that are worth noting when you are in the market for a CD storage cabinet.  Here is how to make the best selection you can:

  • DVDs and CD are actually the same sized disc, but the cases are where there is a difference.  The original maker of the CD (Sony), patented the plastic jeweled CD case also.  When DVDs came out, they decided that they wanted their own cases.  Plus a DVD case is meant to showcase more information about the movie that is contains.  They are similar in height and width to the old VHS cases, so it was only logical to stay with that form factor.
  • When making a choice on a CD cabinet, you should think about the total number of both CDs and DVDs that you may put on it.  Most DVD stands have ratings for the quantity of each.  Obviously you can fit more CDs that DVD typically.  Most manufacturers accomplish this by allowing you to move the shelves.  Ikea DVD stands are especially good at listing the quantity of CDs, DVDs and even VHS that they will hold.
  • Choose a material, wood, or finish that fits the decor of the room that you are putting this unit into.  Most CD storage furniture will last you a life time.  It is a piece of furniture, plan to treat it as such.
  • Manufacturers are coming out with new models just about every 6 months.  If you watch the paper or the internet, you can score big savings by waiting until the new models come out and trying to find a previous model.  These cabinets go on sale very often.  If you are buying online, remember to calculate shipping and tax into the cost for your comparisons.
  • Most CD storage cabinets will come disassemble.  Be sure you feel comfortable putting these together.  Luckily most companies have smoothed out all the assembly problems and these are pretty simple to put together.  If possible, add some extra screws or nails to the unit and some glue in the joints to insure this cabinet stays sturdy for years to come.
  • If you have children it may be a good idea to buy a CD DVD storage cabinet with locking doors.  This can keep them out of your prized music collection.  There is nothing more frustrating than finding your favorite CD has a scratch in it!

Buying a CD storage cabinet is very similar to buying a DVD cabinet with just a couple small differences.
